Astmanaut

Case study

“Astmanaut er sat i verden for at skabe tryghed for skolebørn med astma. På astmanaut.dk finder du alt, der er værd at vide om astma – og det, der skal til, for at skabe et trygt børneliv med astma. Det vigtigste redskab er denne film, der giver et godt billede af, hvad astma er og hvilke forholdsregler, man skal tage, i forhold til et barn med astma. Astmanaut er udviklet i samarbejde mellem Viborg Kommune & Børneafdelingen, Regionshospitalet Viborg.”

Task

Creating an animation/ infographics about explaining what is asthma, what causes it, what to do to prevent it and also showing that it is possible to have a normal life with this condition.

Process

We needed to make the target group engaged, to create an emotional connection with the video and so we created two characters, a father and his daughter.
Also the father needed to be have a role of caring for his own children meaning knowing in dept what asthma is, what to do about it, having lots of patience to talk about these subjects, a trait we wanted to show that is present in fathers also and not only in the mothers.
We choose a daughter (Anna) more for the empowering of women in a way that asthma is not an obstacle for them to be able to accomplish anything physical. They can still do it even with asthma.
The scenario is a kitchen and the time is when the daughter is about to go to school. We thought that this would be a relaxed way of introducing the theme. The father asks if the daughter has remembered to put the asthma spray on her school bag. With this we introduce the theme subtly.
The film was divided in 2 distinctive ways. The “real world” where the father and Anna are and interact with each other and the “explanation” where we explain what asthma is, what causes it, what to do about it. We added then a transition animation so that it would be understandable to the viewer, that the “explanation” part of the film was about to begin. And again when the “explanation” was over and the viewer was brought back to the “real world”.

Style

2D animation with graphical elements.

Development

We had further meetings regarding the style and showed some references. Later on, the script was based on these meetings. With the script done we were asked to do a fast draft character design about the main characters.

Character Father early design test

Character Anna early design test

After that we started doing the story board. It took 3 versions of it to get a solid and pleasant idea of what the movie was going to show and how.

Soon after we did the animatic to get a better notion about the timing of each animation with voice recorded test dialogues. With this we were able to correct some animation timings on the infographics animation part.

After the pre-production as ended with started production, meaning animation. To finalize the characters we had to do them in different angle like  front , 3/4 and side view for the different shots we had defined in the storyboard and then we started the rigging process. Its the part where add “joints” to the 2D drawings. After that we add “controllers” that control those “joints” so that we can animate them.

Final character design with controllers

This animation movie add 2 different styles of animation. One was character based meaning characters walking, running, talking all the acting. The other style was more as motiongraphics meaning representation of lungs, transitions from the “real world” to the “explanation”, everything that was to explain what asthma was through graphical elements.

The sound needed to be relaxing but important in order to support also the script. There were added small sound effects in specific times in the animation to make that part more relevant and important. In the end the music plus the sound effects created a great atmosphere for the viewer making it easy to absorb the information with a cozy feeling.

Conclusion

We learned a lot with this project like creating a solid pipeline, more complex rigs, also how to combine different types of animation not to mention in dept what is asthma. The campaign had lots of coverage and many positive reviews from the people either young or old. The young ones felt better and wanted to see it again and again and the older ones were surprised because they learned something new with it.
